Black By Popular Demand, 1990. Silk Organza, 360” x 360” x 252”. Collection of The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. This work of silk flags overdyed in black, creates a smoky, atmospheric enviornment in the main hall of the Corcoran. It was created by the Fabric Workshop for Lipski’s 1990 exhibition there, and was re-installed after the tragedy of 9/11. Its title is a reference to Ron Bladen’s seminal work The Black X which occupied the same space some 25 years earlier.
